Authorization of the Foundation of the Department of Education

Yonsei Department of Education was established on August 15, 1946, receiving the authorization of its foundation from the Ministry of Education of the US Army Military Government, in conjunction with the foundation of Yonsei University

Foundation of the Department of Education

Yonsei Department Education was officially launched by establishing it within the College of Liberal Arts and recruiting new students.

Foundation of the Institute for Educational Research

Established in 1955, the Institute for Educational Research, currently functioning as an inter-university research center, aims to contribute to the development of education in South Korea by conducting theoretical and practical research on education and its related sciences. In line with this objective, it actively participates in internal educational reform research for university improvement, promotes research exchanges with other research institutes as an inter-university institute, strengthens the acquisition of research projects both internally and externally, enhances industry-academia collaboration, facilitates international academic exchanges, and improves operational systems and computerization of tasks to enhance research activities. The institute publishes the biannual academic journal The Education Research for Tomorrow.

Departmental Transfer to College of Education 

As a result of the school organization reform, Yonsei Department of Education under the College of Liberal Arts and the Department of Physical Education under the College of Science were separated and established as an independent College of Education.

College Renaming as College of Educational Sciences

The College of Education changed its name to the College of Educational Sciences and, In 1992, the Department of Physical Education was split to establish the Department of Social Physical Education, resulting in the reorganization of the college into three departments.

50th Anniversary of Foundation

By securing competent faculty members across various fields and producing excellent talents through education, Yonsei Department of Education emerged as one of the top departments of education in South Korea.

Selected as the Best in Education in the 2007 University Evaluation

In the 2007 University Evaluation conducted by the Ministry of Education, Yonsei Department of Education achieved the highest rating in three areas and an excellent rating in one area, among the four assessed areas, resulting in being selected as the overall top department in education.

Reorganization as the Department of Education of the College of Educational Sciences

Starting from 2009 (academic year), students have been enrolled to the Department of Education under the College of Educational Sciences. With a faculty of 14 outstanding professors in various fields of education, Yonsei Department of Education had produced 656 master's and doctoral graduates. As of 2009, there were over 330 undergraduate and graduate students enrolled.

Relocation of the Department of Education Building (Education Sciences Hall)

Since the establishment of Yonsei Department of Education, it had been situated in Yongjae Hall, a place that had been the foundation of the department. However, in order to provide an academic and research environment that befits the department's reputation, the department relocated to a new building called Comprehensive Hall. Furthermore, the building underwent remodeling and its name was changed to the Education Sciences Hall, firmly establishing it as the new home of the Department of Education.

Grade A in the 2016 Evaluation of Teacher Training Institution (Education Departments in Universities)

In the 2016 Evaluation of Teacher Training Institutions (education departments in universities) conducted by the Ministry of Education and the Korean Educational Development Institute, Yonsei Department of Education was granted Grade A. With this achievement, Yonsei Department of Education has been recognized as the top education department in South Korean universities, continuously receiving Grade A in the 3rd and 4th evaluations following its recognition as the top department in the 2nd evaluation cycle in 2007.
